This seems to be because the text color is “transparent”. Chrome and Safari treat this differently. The result in Chrome is better but Safari actually makes the letters fully transparent. Making the color white (same as the background) provides nearly the same result in both browsers.

Apparently it’s due to be added to the spec by, errrr, November 4, 2011.
